Description#

Interactive map of every North American balancing authority territory (85 BAs incl. Canadian and Mexican interconnection members). Each territory is a pastel-filled region; hovering shows the BA name, code, annual net generation, and territory area. Larger BAs carry their code directly on the map; small municipal BAs are hover-only. The three hub BAs of this project (CAISO, PACE, PACW) carry larger labels. The legend lists every BA and toggles its region on and off.

Formulas Used: N/A.

Data Cleaning Information: Ring vertices are thinned with Douglas-Peucker (~1.2 km tolerance) at chart build time so canvas panning stays smooth; territories are drawn largest-first so embedded small BAs remain visible and hoverable.

Notes#

  • Polygons are EIA’s control-area regions layer (2025-02 edition) - the successor to the retired HIFLD “Control Areas” layer that most public BA maps still render (2021 vintage).

  • BA territories are service-area approximations built from utility service territories, not electrical topology; footprints overlap, and nothing should be area-weighted against them.

  • Analytical plant-to-BA membership in this project comes from eia860m_generators, never from these polygons.
