Chart: Generation by Fuel#
Generation by Fuel Group in Five Tabs: Daily Trend, Average 24-hour Profile, Small Multiples, Date-By-Hour Heatmaps, and 15-minute Detail for the Last Six Months.
Chart#
Sources: caiso.com Today's Outlook (fuel source)
Description#
System-wide CAISO generation by fuel group, presented as five tabs:
Daily - daily-mean stacked area (US/Pacific days): the trend view, with the high-frequency intraday cycle averaged out.
Average Day - the mean 24-hour profile by hour of day (US/Pacific): the diurnal view - midday solar peak, evening gas ramp, and the battery charge/discharge cycle.
Small Multiples - one panel per fuel group on a shared timeline, so each fuel’s behavior reads without stacked-baseline distortion.
Heatmaps - date × hour-of-day grids for solar, natural gas, and batteries. The battery map uses a diverging scale (blue charging, red discharging); the duck curve is visible as the daily color bands.
15-Min Detail - the trailing six months of 15-minute means, for zooming into specific events. (Downsampled from the 5-minute feed: the browser repaints the whole stack on every zoom step, and the full-window 5-minute version made that repaint lag.)
The thirteen source fuels fold into seven stacked series - Natural gas, Solar, Wind, Hydro (large + small), Nuclear, Imports, and Other (geothermal, biomass, biogas, coal, other). Battery output is kept separate throughout because it is signed: negative when charging, positive when discharging.
Formulas Used: N/A.
Data Cleaning Information: No values are altered - every view is a plain mean of the 5-minute feed over its bucket (day, hour of day, date x hour, or 15-minute interval). The only other processing is grouping: the thirteen source fuels are combined into the seven stacked groups listed above, and batteries remain their own series because their output is signed (negative while charging, positive while discharging).
Notes#
The 15-Min Detail tab is in UTC; daily, average-day, and heatmap views bucket by US/Pacific so the diurnal shapes line up with local time.
Solar dips slightly negative overnight (station load at the plants).
Stacked and line series can be toggled via the legends.
